Stir-Fry Sticky Tofu
Hoisin sauce, a thick, dark brown condiment, is a staple in Asian cooking, made from soybeans, garlic, vinegar, and spices, adding a sweet and savory flavor to dishes. With its sweet and savory taste, hoisin sauce adds a rich and tangy flavor to dishes. It is often used as a dipping sauce for spring rolls, dumplings, and roasted meats, or as a glaze for stir-fried dishes.
Today, we will be creating sticky tofu, a delicious dish ready in under 30 minutes with just hoisin sauce, tofu, and basic ingredients, perfect to enjoy with steaming hot rice.
Ingredients
For Frying Tofu Pieces
2 tofu blocks (275g), cut into cubes
5 tbsp cornstarch (27g)
1 tsp Chinese 5 Spice Powder
A pinch salt
For making Sticky Tofu
4 tbsp vegetable oil
1 red Onion (60g), chopped roughly
4 cloves garlic (14g), minced
2 small chillies, chopped thinly
Ginger (6g), minced
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp Hoisin Sauce
1 tsp Sugar
For Garnishing

Directions
- Combine cornstarch, Chinese five spices, and salt in a bowl. Whisk the flour together until well blended.
- Next,toss the tofu in the flour until it is well coated on all sides.
- Begin by heating oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
- Prior to frying the tofu pieces, transfer a few to a colander and shake to remove excess flour.
- This particular method of removing excess flour ensures that there is minimal residue left in the oil, enabling us to utilize the oil for further cooking the rest of the dish.
- Fry each tofu cube individually, ensuring they are not touching each other. Flip them over after 2 minutes of frying or till they are golden.
- Then transfer the fried tofu cubes to a different dish.
- To make the sauce, heat the pan over medium-high heat with the remaining oil and add the diced onions.
- Cook the onion for one minute, then proceed to add the minced ginger, garlic, and chillies.
- Sauté until aromatic, then mix in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and sugar.
- Give the ingredients a quick mix before adding the fried tofu cubes.
- The dish is complete when all the tofu pieces are thoroughly covered in the sticky sauce.
- Give it a final touch by sprinkling some roasted sesame seeds and mixing it one more time before serving.
- Enjoy this dish over a bed of fluffy white rice, and for a complete meal, pair it with some steamed greens. Top it off with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, fresh spring onions, and sliced red chillies for added flavor and color.
